Cole eyes England start

Joe Cole believes his international experience could give him the edge in Fabio Capello’s selection plans for England’s first World Cup game against the USA (13/2 to beat England with Bwin).

The 28-year-old was somewhat of a surprise inclusion in Capello’s squad having not featured for the Three Lions in 20 months before his appearance against Japan in a friendly match last month.

Cole struggled to establish himself in Chelsea’s double-winning side last season and there were suggestions he wouldn’t make the final cut for the 23-man squad.

However, Cole has proven his worth and looks to be starting to get back to his best after a serious knee injury with Capello giving him the number 11 shirt, indicating he could find himself in the Italian’s start line ups.

However, Cole isn’t getting too carried away with things and says he’s still crossing his fingers that he will be given his chance to shine in England’s tournament opener on Saturday.

“Managers like experience, especially at the start of tournaments,” he said.

“It would mean the world to me to play against America and play in a third World Cup.

“I’m back to my best and want to show it at this World Cup.”

While Cole says he is fully focused on the World Cup, the midfielder might be forgiven for being distracted after his club Chelsea revealed they wouldn’t be renewing his contract.

A host of clubs are thought to be interested in Cole, with the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United, Tottenham and West Ham all reportedly after him.
