Dutch trim World Cup squad

Holland boss Bert van Marwijk has sent three players home from his 30-man provisional World Cup squad as he whittles down his team ahead of the deadline for announcing the final line-ups.

The former Feyenoord boss has axed Otman Bakkal, Wout Brama and David Mendes da Silva, all of which play their domestic football in their homeland with PSV Eindhoven, FC Twente and AZ Alkmaar respectively.

Inter Milan’s Wesley Sneijder and Bayern Munich duo Mark van Bommel and Arjen Robben will link up with the rest of the Dutch squad after their Champions League final commitments on May 22.

Van Marwijk is expected to name his final 23-man squad for the World Cup on May 27.

Despite their impressive qualification campaign, in which the Dutch won every game without conceding a goal in their home fixtures, they remain outsiders for the title in South Africa with Spain, Brazil and England largely considered the favourites.
