Ferguson backs Rooney
Manchester United are 5/2 to win the Premier League and manager Sir Alex Ferguson has backed Wayne Rooney to bounce back after the disappointment of the World Cup.
Rooney was part of the England squad that performed so poorly at the tournament in South Africa this summer.
The 24-year-old went into the competition on the back of an outstanding season with United but was unable to recreate that form at the World Cup.
However, Ferguson has said he thinks Rooney’s club form will not be affected this season by the disappointment of his recent international performances.
He said: “I don’t expect a hangover. I think there’ll still be a bit of disappointment in the lad.
“I think all the players coming back from the World Cup who didn’t do well, who didn’t reach their expectations may, I say, will feel that they’ve missed something,” he added.
Rooney’s team-mates Patrice Evra, and Nemanja Vidic also had disappointing World Cups and will be looking to put the tournament behind them as they prepare for the next domestic campaign.
United will be looking to win back the Premier League title from rivals Chelsea (6/4 to win the Premier League) who won the league and FA Cup double last season.
