Liverpool could be set to have a new striker to bolster their attack as Milan Jovanovic claims he has agreed a deal to move to Anfield.

The Serbia international has said he is confident he will move to Liverpool on a Bosman transfer from Belgian club Standard Liege for the beginning of next season.

Jovanovic has been linked with a move to the Premier League club for a while, but there were reports the uncertainty over manager Rafa Benitez’s future had put doubts over the deal.

Arteta ‘deserves place in Spain squad’

Everton boss David Moyes thinks his inspirational midfielder Mikel Arteta deserves a place in Spain’s World Cup squad.

The Spanish playmaker was brought to Goodison Park by Moyes in 2005 from Real Sociedad and has impressed in the Everton midfield over the years.

Despite this, the 28-year-old has never won a full cap for his country but played for Spain at under-17, under-18 and under-21 level.

The Gunners were rocked by the news that captain Cesc Fabregas has broken his right fibula on Wednesday evening and will miss the rest of the campaign. He is also struggling to make Spain’s World Cup squad for the tournament in June.

Fabregas fears for World Cup

On Tuesday it was Wayne Rooney, on Wednesday it was Cesc Fabregas limping out of a Champions League match. This has seen Arsenal’s odds of progressing to the last-eight lengthen to 23/4 with bwin.

The Arsenal captain had passed a late fitness test to feature in the tie after being rated at 40% to feature in the game earlier in the day. However, he admitted that he was desperate to play against his former club and Arsene Wenger granted him his wish.

Rooney injury not as bad as first feared

The news coming out of Old Trafford is favourable for England fans but uncertainty still reigns over the number of games that Wayne Rooney will miss for Manchester United.

A club statement, released at lunchtime on Thursday, stated that “We’re pleased to report that Wayne has not suffered a fracture (to his ankle). The scan revealed only minor ligament damage.”

Eriksson contends whilst Djakpa won't defend

The Ivory Coast have suffered another major blow with the news that Constant Djakpa is unlikely to be fit enough to make the World Cup squad.

Capello – Spain are the favourites

England boss Fabio Capello has identified Spain as the favourites to lift the World Cup in South Africa.

The current European champions are the favourites to lift the trophy and Capello has admitted he sees them as the most dangerous side heading to South Africa this summer.

In an interview with a Spanish televsion station he said: “Spain have a confidence, a system of play that makes it difficult to beat them – and they don’t rely on one player to score the goals.”

Rooney facing four week lay-off

Initial reports suggest Manchester United and England star Wayne Rooney faces up to four weeks on the sidelines after twisting his ankle in Tuesday’s Champions League defeat at Bayern Munich.

The England forward had given Manchester United the lead in the early stages at the Allianz Arena but Rooney limped off towards the end of the fixture with an ankle injury.
