London’s Rugby Union derby: Saracens v Wasps
The Saracens will be staging a Boxing Day extravaganza, when they clash with the Wasps at Wembley Stadium. In the most hyped match of the 2010/11 Aviva Championship’s Round 11, the two London sides battle both for points and for the bragging rights in the capital.
Apart from the actual game, the spectators will be treated with pre-match performances by singer Eliza Doolittle and the Great British Barbershop boys. Furthermore, another factor which is expected to draw the not-so-hardcore fans, will be the likely return of former Strictly Come Dancing contestant Gavin Henson to competitive rugby.
Henson knows better than anyone that rugby is not dancing, recognising that during his weeks of commitment to the TV competition, he didn’t have much contact work. Nevertheless, he declares that he is ready to help the team, and even though he will most likely start from the bench, he’s going to be a considerable addition to the Saracens arsenal.
Brendan Venter’s side currently sits on third place of the table, which leads to the play-offs and a berth in the 2011–12 Heineken Cup, even on points with the London Irish, but with a victory more.
On the other side, the Wasps are at fifth place, needing the victory more than their rivals, if they want to continue their chase of the Irish. After having signed a new three-year contract with scrum-half Joe Simpson, Shaun Edwards and his men have a difficult task, but they surely shouldn’t be underestimated.
Both teams are coming from victories on Round 10, with the Saracens beating the Harlequins 26-14, while the visitors outpointed the Exeter Chiefs, for a 24-12 win.
If you haven’t made any plans for Boxing Day yet, it would be a perfect opportunity to watch some affordable, high-quality rugby, with tickets available for as low as 11 pounds for adults, and six pounds for under-16s. Combined with the pre-match show and the money prizes offered for lucky spectators, it wouldn’t be a surprise if they broke their previous crowd record at Wembley, reaching the 50,000 mark this time.
It’s a tough match to judge, but the Saracens are the favourites by a slight margin, in my opinion. Betfred currently offers them at 9/1 to be the regular season winners and at 7/1 to win the Grand Final. As for the Wasps, a 20/1 is given, should they top the table and 12/1 if they are triumphant at the end.
