Andy Murray Set To Go Solo Through Rest Of 2010

Andy Murray is set continue through the rest of the ATP Tour season without an official coach.

The world No.4 who trails only Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic in the world standings has been without a coach since splitting with Miles McLagan in July.

The Scot continues to work with former tour player Alex Corretja but is reluctant to make a hasty decision about who will guide the next phase of his career.

“I want to make sure I pick the right coach,” said Murray prior to the China Open.

“I don’t want to just go for anyone as it might be a mistake after three or four months … I’m going to keep working with Alex through to the end of the year and then look to appoint someone before the start of the new year, probably in December time, when I’ve got a bit of time to try some coaches out.”

The 23-year-old has previously worked with fellow Brit Mark Petchey before moving to the American Brad Gilbert, who famously guided the careers of both Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick.  That move to Gilbert was seen as a big move in Murray’s career, now he needs make another bold move if he is to challenge the top three in the world.

Having endured a moderate season by his own high standards (just one tour win, coming at the Toronto Masters, and a poor showing in the Slams) Murray must find the coach who will take him to that elusive first Grand Slam win.

That won’t come in 2010, nor does it look like his new coach will be appointed before the year end, but the choice needs to be made soon and it needs to be the right one.
