Workforce workhorse wins Derby

Workforce romped to an emphatic victory in Saturday’s Epsom Derby and is now the 4/1 favourite for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in October.

The win capped a breathtaking double for jockey Ryan Moore after he rode Snow Fairy to success in Friday’s Oaks, breaking his Epsom duck.

Workforce was a 6/1 shot going into Saturday’s Derby and it was his spurt of pace towards the end which sealed the victory by seven lengths in a record race time.

Before this, 100/1 outsider At First Sight was leading the way, threatening to produce one of the biggest shocks in Derby history. The Aidan O’Brien trained horse finished a creditable second.

Frankie Dettori’s Rewilding finished a half-length third whilst pre-race favourite Jan Vermeer finished fourth, despite travelling well throughout the race and showing some pace towards the end to come from behind.

Moore now heads into next week’s Royal Ascot meeting in confident mood and it is expected that he will ride Ask in the Ascot Gold Cup. Ask is an 8/1 shot for the race whilst Manifest has been installed as the 3/1 favourite.
